10 Skincare Resolutions for the New Year

A New Year means it’s time for a fresh start, and out with the old skincare routine that’s leading to no results or causing more harm than good. To achieve the best skin of your life, start with these beneficial and easy skincare practices for the New Year.

1. Out with the Old

Not many people know that every skincare or beauty product has an expiration date. Go through your cabinet and look for the number inside of a jar at the bottom of the container. That number represents how many months that product is good for after it’s been opened. After so many months, products lose their potency and can potentially do more harm than good after their expiration date is up.

2. Do Your Research

Take a good, long look in the mirror and identify what it is that you love about your skin: the texture, the even skin tone, the freckles, the firmness. Now, you might be finding yourself nitpicking your skin a bit too. Perhaps there are things that you don’t particularly admire about your skin. What are some things that you would like to change? Identify those things and do a bit of research to find the best products for targeting those specific ailments.

3. Establish A Routine

Once you have your products in line, it’s time to commit to a routine. That means both A.M and P.M routines need to a priority. Your routine doesn’t need to consist of a 16-step regimen. Keep it simple with a cleanser, a tone, a serum, and a moisturizer with SPF for the day, and add in an under-eye cream for at night.

4. Understand the Importance of Water

Water—we’re made up of 75% of this natural resource. Our bodies need water more than any other substance. Hydrated skin is supple, glowing, and youthful. Next time you have the urge to reach for the soda or energy drink, chug a glass of water first.

5. Quit Smoking

Smoking is unhealthy for many reasons. Most people associate smoking with cancer, but it can also have severe repercussions for your skin. Smoking can cause premature wrinkles around the mouth, clogged pores due to toxins from the smoke, dark spot, and even a yellow tint to the skin. Ditch the carton this New Year and allow your skin (and lungs) a chance to breathe.

6. Take Your Vitamins, but Also Apply Your Vitamins

Vitamins are essential for staying healthy, but they also have tremendous benefits for our skin. When searching for your skincare products, look for products that have ingredients that include: vitamin C for brightening and correct dark spots, vitamin E for hydration and anti-aging benefits, vitamin B to improve skin tone, and vitamin A to increase cell turnover and slow down the signs of aging.

7. Remove All Your Makeup

Possibly one of the best resolutions to make this year is to never again sleep in your makeup, no matter how tired you may be. Our skin repairs itself while we sleep by releasing toxins, pollutions, and initiating cell turnover. If our makeup isn’t all the way removed, toxins can get trapped underneath the skin causing breakouts and premature aging.

8. Apply Your SPF

Rain or shine, apply the sunscreen. The sun, while fantastic for many different reasons, can severely damage our skin. By using sunscreen, you’re protecting your skin from premature wrinkles, dark spots, and dehydration, which can lead to dullness and other issues.

9. Moisturize

Hot showers or baths, while luxurious and relaxing, can cause dehydrated and itchy skin. To keep your body hydrated and supple, apply a daily moisturizer every day after showering for soft, healthier-looking skin.
