What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is a very popular procedure right now. It involves the removal of fat from other parts of the body, usually around the belly button, flanks, or thighs, treatment of that fat, and then reinjecting into the face. This procedure can be very beneficial to patients who are looking to target the signs of aging in a natural way.

What are the Benefits of Facial Fat Transfer with Dr. Guy?

When you choose Dr. Guy as your facial specialist, you’ll get much more than a typical surgeon has to offer. Dr. Guy is highly qualified, personable, knowledgeable, and has your best interest in mind. He will fully educate you on everything you want to know about facial fat transfer and any other surgical or non-surgical options that you are interested in.

Dr. Guy aims to provide his patients with the benefits that they want to see from their procedure.

Some of the benefits of facial fat transfer with Dr. Guy include:

The best results start with the right assessment. Dr. Guy will use his expertise to pinpoint the areas where facial fat transfer could benefit you the most.

Because Dr. Guy adds fat from your own body to contour your face, the results will look and feel more natural.

Like dermal fillers, facial fat transfer restores volume to the face. The nice part about fat transfer is that it tends to last longer than the temporary fillers found on the market.

There is also the added benefit of removing fat from an unwanted location in the body.

Fat transfer is also very similar to dermal fillers in that it addresses sunken cheeks, undereye bags, dark circles, wrinkles, lines, thin lips, and many other areas.

“I love to teach. I want the patients to be very well educated on what we are doing before they leave to allow for a smoother recovery process. We create a customized plan for each patient. We dedicate a lot of time to each patient to make sure no one ever feels rushed.”

Who Is a Good Candidate for Facial Fat Transfer?

First, you have to have enough of a donor supply. For those patients who have low body fat, they may not be candidates for an adequate transfer to the face.

Second, this is not a good treatment for younger patients. The reason is that the fat undergoes a change around the time of menopause. The fat harvested from the body tends to grow and can leave a very abnormal and overdone look for younger patients as they undergo menopause.

Other criteria that you should generally meet are:

  • You have realistic expectations.
  • You are generally healthy.
  • You do not smoke or drink excessively.
  • You have sunken cheeks.
  • You have undereye bags or dark circles.
  • You have thin lips.
  • You fully understand the risks of the procedure.

If you think that facial fat transfer may be right for you, we encourage you to speak with Dr. Guy about what this fantastic procedure can do for you.

You may have some pain in the first few days after the procedure, although Dr. Guy can provide you with a prescription for pain medication. Dr. Guy will provide you with a comprehensive list of “dos and don’ts,” which will help you have the smoothest possible recovery. Because of the nature of this procedure, your face will need adequate time to heal. Each patient will heal differently. This procedure may take up to three months to heal completely, but some may heal more quickly. That said, the results can last for a very long time if taken care of properly.

Fat transfer is not as predictable as other treatments. The reason has to do with the new fat stem cells getting a new blood supply in the face. As this occurs, not all of the fat that is transferred will survive. For deeper injection locations like around the cheeks and the temples, this will likely never be noticed. For areas of thinner skin that are transferred, such as the tear troughs or around the eyebrows, the unpredictability of the fat survival can lead to contour irregularities that can be difficult to treat. This does not mean these areas are not treated, just that they do carry a higher risk of a less than ideal outcome. The other drawback over traditional fillers is that fat transfer is an operation, although it can be performed in the office or in the operating room based on patient preference.

Notwithstanding the limitations, fat transfer can be a very good treatment for appropriately chosen patients with more longevity than other options. Dr. Guy can discuss all of this with you during your consultation.
